Asian eye makeup: Using eyeliner

Welcome to Lesson 3.

If you have missed our previous posts, you may want to catch up on Lesson 1 and Lesson 2. Now, if you have been following our posts, you will find that we started from the easiest eye makeup technique and building on that, each week. This week, we will show you how to use liquid eyeliner.

See the difference a simple layer of eyeliner can make to your look!

1. Preparing the base by applying a base shadow all over the eyelid, highlight under the brow and a darker overlay eyeshadow along lashes. Blossom, princess and sakura eyeshadow from enso cosmetics available at Vanity Boulevard.

2. Here we are going to apply 2 layers of eyeliner: Kohl eyeliner and liquid eyeliner. To begin, use a fine flat brush to swab some kohl eyeliner and apply to the upper lashline, from inner corner to the outer corner to frame the eyes. This method of applying kohl eyeliner is much easier to control.

3. Next, apply the liquid eyeliner with light strokes along the lash line (on the root of the lashes) from the inner to the outer corner and extend the line about 1mm longer than lash line.

4. Use a cotton bud to gently clean off any mistakes or excess eyeliner to keep the eyeliner lines clean.

5. Apply some eyeshadow along the lower lash line to open up the eyes and prevent the eyeliner from smudging onto the area under the lower eyelash.

6. Apply 2 layers of black mascara on the upper lashes, and the lower lashes, if you prefer a more dramatic look. Place the wand horizontally, close to the root of the lashes, wriggle the wand a little to create more volume. Then stroke the wand upwards to coat the entire length of the lashes from roots to tips.

7. For finishing touches, apply blusher on the apple of the cheek, move towards the nose and then back out just under the apple of the cheek - forming a horizontal V-shape. Repeat on the other side.

8. Finally, a sheer lip tint for a polished look.

Simple Asian eyes makeup

In the previous post, we have shown you how to enhance your eyes without using eyeliner. If you have tried that out and had some degree of success, then welcome to Lesson 2 - eye makeup using pencil eyeliner.

This is still a simple method and not that different from the previous one, just that this time, we are adding more definition to the eyes. This makeup technique is particularly great on asian eyes, hence the title. But of course, it works for everyone.

1. Apply a neutral eyeshadow as base all over the eyelids

2. Use a lighter colour eyeshadow to highlight under the brows, focusing on the inner corner of the eyes to open up and create an illusion of bright eyes.

3. Use gentle strokes to apply the 'frame colour' eyeshadow on the lash line, from the inner corner of the eye towards the outer corner on the upper lash line.Then circle back to the inner corner on the lower lash line. Gently dab more colour to fill any spots to even out.

4. Apply a pencil eyeliner, from the inner corner to the outer corner. Always with light strokes and add more intensity to your liking. Keep on the lash line as much as you can unless you want to be dramatic. Finish with a soft trail at the outer corner for a more natural look.

5. Next draw a fine line on the lower lash line from outside in, along the water line, but only go 2/3 of the way for a more natural look. Smudge the lower lash eyeliner with a cotton bud to soften the line.

6. Apply an 'overlay colour' on the upper eyelid, close to the eyelash. This layer of eyeshadow will be applied on the eyeliner. This helps to make the eye liner last longer, less likely to smudge and looks softer - giving you a more feminine look.

7. Finish with black mascara. Start from the roots and coat the entire length of the lashes. Finally, place the tip of the mascara wand at the root of the lashes of the outermost corner of the upper lash, and gently flick it upwards to add definition to the eyes.

The result: Subtle yet alluring eyes that works for day or night.

Easy eye makeup: How to enhance your eyes without any eyeliner

In the past few years, most makeup artists, celebrities and makeup enthusiasts, have emphasized on eye makeup to make beauty statements. Hence, eyeliner has quickly become virtually indispensible because of its ability to define and draw attention to the eyes. However, applying eyeliner, especially liquid eyeliner can be time-consuming, messy and tedious. So it may be nice to go eyeliner-free once in a while to save time on applying and removing eye makeup.

Instead of using eyeliner, here we show you how to let your eyes pop by framing it with eyeshadows.

This is a simple, easy and quick method to enhances your eyes. Furthermore, unlike using eyeliner, this is a very forgiving method and do not need much practice, so even if you don't have much experience in applying eye makeup, you can still get it right. It is a great stepping-stone to mastering eyeliner application. Finally, the best part of it all, you can simply change the eyeshadow colour each time to change your look -

• bold colours will let your eyes pop;
• pastel colours will give you a soft and romantic look;
• neutral colours will brighten up your eyes;
• cool colours will create a dreamy look;
• golden colours will glamourise; and
• warm colours will make your eyes twinkle.

1. Apply a neutral eyeshadow as base all over the lids and on the lower lash line.

2. Apply a 'frame colour' on the upper and lower lash line, starting from the inner corner outward to the outer corner of the eyes. Emphasising on the outer corner.

3. Apply an 'overlay colour' on the upper and lower lash line, again focusing on the outer corner of the eyes.

4. Apply 2-3 layers black of mascara on the upper lashes, focusing on the base of the lashes, and one layer of mascara on the lower lashes for a finishing touch.

Tips:

• When choosing colours, feel free to explore and let out some creativity. However, generally, it is best to pick out a set of 3 shades: light (as base), medium (for frame colour) and dark (for overlay colour). Remember the shades are in comparison to each other.
• The purpose of the base eyeshadow is to smooth out any unevenness of colour on the eyelids and around the eyes and to make the frame colour and overlay colour last longer. Keep the colour natural, either one shade darker or lighter to your skin tone regardless of what colour you choose.
• The frame colour will set the tone of your eyes and hence your look. So be daring with this one.
• The overlay colour is the colour that will replace your eyeliner, therefore, it is the darkest of the 3 layers and this is what makes the eyes pop. Choose lighter colours will brighten up the eyes, darker colours will create a smoky look.
